Galway Club gets off to flying start

Last year saw the hugely successful launch of Rotaract Galway; a group for young people who aim to make a little difference to the world. Rotaract Galway is about community and charity involvement, while making social connections and expanding professional and international opportunities. The society focuses on voluntary work and raising money for charity
through fun and unusual social and sporting events. Rotaract Galway was launched officially with an Intro Night held in The King's Head in February 2006, and a week later our first event, a 5-aside Soccer Blitz in aid of Console Suicide Awareness, took place in NUIG Sports Hall. The event was a great success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The best team on the day won, and €700 was raised for COPE in the process. Our next major event was a Family Guy/Simpsons table quiz in aid of Irish Dogs for the Blind in March. This was another triumph for Rotaract.  MC of the night Ed O' Mahoney added much humour and the winners enjoyed Family Guy and Simpsons goodies, while €350 was raised for the blind.

Other projects include liaison with PlayWell Ireland, an organisation that provides entertainment and company for sick children in hospital. Several  members of Rotaract are volunteering to help with this project, which will recommence this semester. Rotaract also raised a considerable sum of money while working with the Galway Rotary club which will be contributed towards Shelter Boxes, which will provide shelter and relief for Earthquake victims.

This semester Rotaract began with a bang, with an exciting Dodgeball Tournament. Many events are lined up for the year, including a fashion  show in collaboration with NUIG's French Soc in aid of Cancer Care West, an Acoustic Night, a Giant Bake Sale, and collaboration with Slainte Soc for the Teddy Bears' Hospital project. Ruth Donnellan is the President of Rotaract Galway. With close ties to Rotary Galway and lots of enthusiasm, she was the perfect candidate for a leader. Dannie Hanna from Ennis is Vice-President, Ed O' Mahoney is our Secretary, Jennifer O' Neill is treasurer, Brid Ni Ghrainne is Charities Officer, PRO is Aoife Ni Chearbhaill, Kate Ni Chonfhaola is Social Co-ordinator, and finally Jonathan Collins is our International Liasion Officer.

With a dedicated and dynamic Committee, and plenty of interesting events lined up for the year, Rotaract Galway is sure to continue to thrive.
